BORIS AND THE SNOOZEBOX by Leigh Hodginkson

A catnap, that’s all Boris wants.  The trouble is that he doesn't have a home, but he soon finds a box that will do.  All is well until the box gets shipped off in the mail- with Boris inside!  Children will enjoy seeing where Boris ends up as he travels across the globe, and even into outer space, hoping to find a home where he can rest his head.  Hodgkinson’s quirky mixed media illustrations go well with her silly story and will be enjoyed by families with children ages 4 and older.  Boris and the Snoozebox can be found in the Easy Section under E HOD.

Baby Rooster doesn't know what to say to wake everyone up in the morning, so he seeks the advice of the other barnyard animals. The pigs, cows, and ducks do their best to help, but nobody wakes up when Baby Rooster yells, "Cock-a-Doodle Oink! Oink!" etc. The wise old owl tells Baby Rooster to listen to his heart, and he'll know what to do. After some comical trial-and-error, Baby Rooster stumbles on the magical words "Cock-a-Doodle-Doo!", and everybody wakes up!

This is a silly book that will have children, ages 2+, rolling with laughter and can be interactive with kids guessing or repeating the noises Baby Rooster tries. Cock-a-Doodle Quack! Quack! can be found in the Easy section under E BAD.

Me and My Dragon

Some kids want a puppy or a kitten for a pet, but this little boy wants a fire-breathing dragon.  In Me and My Dragon by David Biedrzycki, a little boy discusses all the ways he would raise and train his pet dragon and the advantages it would have.  “Bullies?  You don’t have to worry about bullies when you have a dragon.”  Much of the book’s humor is found in the details of the whimsical illustrations and will be mainly enjoyed by kids ages 4 and older.  Me and My Dragon can be found in the Easy picture book section of the library under E BIE.

WINDCATCHER By Avi

While getting ready to spend a summer with his grandmother on the coast, 11-year-old Tony buys himself a small sailboat.  It is this purchase that gets him caught in the middle of an old mystery surrounding the founding of his new summer home. This adventurous tale involves missing treasure, conspiracies, and suspicious travelers and is appropriate for children ages 8 and up.  This book can be found in the Juvenile Section under J AVI and its audio version, narrated by George Guidall, can be found in the same section under J C AVI.

MY WEIRD WRITING TIPS by Dan Gutman

If you like the Weird School Series, you should give this nonfiction writing guide a try. Believe me, it’s the same Dan Gutman you’re used to and he writes in the same silly and accessible way, even when giving grammar and punctuation advice. Barely longer than one of this Weird School selections, this book is not a comprehensive writing manual, but it does cover some of the most common spelling, grammar, and usage mistakes - and Gutman’s examples are anything but boring. So if you want to write it right, and not be a “dumbhead” (quoting the author), find this book in the Juvenile Nonfiction section at J 808.042 GUT and check it out.

KITTEN'S FIRST FULL MOON by Keven Henkes

In this adorable black-and-white children’s book, the kitten runs into a series of misfortunes as she attempts to get to the giant bowl of milk in the night sky.  From accidentally swallowing a bug to falling into a lake, poor Kitten finally gives up the chase and treks back home to find a bowl of milk waiting for her on the porch.  Kitten’s First Full Moon is a tale of perseverance and learning and is illustrated by simple but lovely charcoal drawings.  This is a perfect read-aloud book and will be enjoyed mainly by kids up to 7 years old.  It can be found in the Easy section of the library under E HEN.
