Colibrí by Ann Cameron

When “Rosa” was 4 years old, she was kidnapped off a bus in Guatemala City by a man who makes her call him “Uncle.”  Uncle is a con artist and a beggar who, after consulting a fortune teller, is convinced that Rosa is destined to lead him to riches.  When the book opens, Rosa is 12 years old, and her life is getting dangerous as Uncle becomes more and more determined to find wealth.  Rosa turns to a sympathetic fortune teller to help her find her parents.  Colibrí is a story of growing up and finding happiness in an insecure world, but more notably, it is a captivating glimpse into Mayan indigenous culture.  This book will be enjoyed mainly by children ages 9-13 and can be found in the Juvenile section of the library under J CAM.
