THE ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS by Scott O'Dell
The Island of the Blue Dolphins is a sad but touching portrayal of a Native American girl left stranded on her home island for 18 years. She must make shelter, find food, and deal with many obstacles as she grows and waits for rescue. This Newberry Award winning novel was inspired by the true story of Juana Maria and is appropriate for grades 5+. Also recommended is the audio edition read by Tantoo Cardinal which truly brings this tale to life and does well as a family listen. Both the book and audio versions of this story can be found in the Juvenile section under J ODE, C J ODE, and BOT J ODE.
