THE HOUSE THAT GEORGE BUILT by Suzanne Slade

Many children are familiar with the rhyme “The House that Jack Built.” That familiarity will return when they pick up Suzanne Slade’s The House that George Built. This book provides a fun historical lesson on the creation of the White House. Readers might be surprised to find out that although George Washington started the house, he never had the opportunity to live in it. Most the story revolves around the construction of the White House, with the rhyme complementing the historical facts. At the end of the story, the author provides details about what some presidents have added to the White House along with  resources to further education about the White House. You can find The House that George Built in the juvenile nonfiction section under J 975.3 SLA.

BIG RED LOLLIPOP by Rukhsana Khan

Not only does Rukhsana Khan write a sweet story about being a sister, but she also manages to make it about growing up in a different country than your parents and going against social norms.  Her character, Rubina, learns what it means to be a good big sister, even though it is hard on her and makes her miss out on the American traditions that her Pakistani mother does not understand.  By the end of the book, Rubina discovers the rewards of being selfless and realizes how important doing the right thing is.  This book is good for older elementary school children and would work well for a family read-a-loud.  You can find this story in the picture book section under E KHA.
