THE ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS by Scott O'Dell

The Island of the Blue Dolphins
is a sad but touching portrayal of a Native American girl left stranded on her home island for 18 years. She must make shelter, find food, and deal with many obstacles as she grows and waits for rescue. This Newberry Award winning novel was inspired by the true story of Juana Maria and is appropriate for grades 5+. Also recommended is the audio edition read by Tantoo Cardinal which truly brings this tale to life and does well as a family listen. Both the book and audio versions of this story can be found in the Juvenile section under J ODE, C J ODE, and BOT J ODE.

BLACKIE THE HORSE WHO STOOD STILL by Christopher Cerf and Paige Peterson

Blackie is not your typical horse! His favorite thing in the world is to just stand still! Blackie the Horse Who Stood Still is a charming biography in rhyme about a horse that some folks would call unnatural and maybe even worthless. Even though Blackie hates change and would prefer to just do nothing, he does manage to find a lifetime of jobs that are a perfect fit: rodeo champion, Yosemite park patrol horse, and favorite pasture "attraction." In the end, Blackie's message to his community, and readers, is that sometimes it takes putting on the brakes to appreciate the beauty around us and sometimes change simply for change's sake is not always progress. Author Christopher Cerf, long-time contributor/creator of Sesame Street, and illustrator Paige Peterson, have collaborated to offer a beautiful tribute to the real-life horse behind this story. You can find this book at E CER at your library but even though it is a picture book, the length and level of difficulty of this book make it a good transition from Easy to Juvenile.

A HOME FOR DIXIE by Emma Jackson

A Home for Dixie is the true story of how one abandoned puppy found its forever home. Written by the teenager who adopted the adorable Dixie, and accompanied by heart-melting photos, the book outlines the responsible way to become a pet-owning family and highlights the ongoing problem of pet overpopulation. In the back of the book, readers can find more information on the volunteer organizations working hard to match up pets with people. Find this book in the Juvenile Nonfiction section at J 636.708 JAC.
If fiction is more your thing, then you might want to check out the Animal Ark series and the Wild at Heart series. In Puppies in the Pantry, Book 3 of the Animal Ark series, a famous dog goes missing and Mandy and her friend James have to find it. Mandy’s parents are veterinarians at the Animal Ark clinic so naturally she grew up wanting to help any animal in need she comes across. Each book in the series features a different type of animal and all of the stories end happily, making them good stories for ages 8 and up. This series can be found in Juvenile Fiction at J BAG. The Wild at Heart series also takes place at an animal clinic, where a group of friends volunteer. In Homeless, Book 2 of the series, Sunita wants a cat desperately but has to battle her mom’s veto. And again a pet goes missing, but this time it’s Socrates the vet mascot. While looking for Socrates, Sunita discovers a large colony of feral cats and learns a lot about abandoned animals. The series is written by Laurie Halse Anderson, the author of award-wining books for both teens and young adults, and while these are not of that caliber, the series is very popular with animal-loving readers in the upper elementary grades and can be found in Juvenile Fiction at J AND. Most importantly, all of these selections stress the importance of taking care of our furry and feathered friends.

EGGS OVER EVIE by Alison Jackson

Evie Carson is your average 13 year old: She likes hanging out with her best friend, she develops a crush on a boy, and she begins to experience the struggles of “growing up.” With divorced parents and her beloved dog living at her dad’s home, Evie’s salvation from her troubles is cooking. Eggs Over Evie is an appropriate book for a tween girl from a divorced family. Evie is a very relatable character who is charming and funny. And for the young lady who enjoys cooking, author Alison Jackson includes Evie-inspired recipes at the end of each chapter. This book can be found in the Juvenile Fiction section under J JAC.
