CAN'T SLEEP WITHOUT SHEEP by Susanna Leonard Hill

Do you have to count sheep to get to sleep?  What would happen if the sheep went on strike?  That's what happens in this comical bedtime story.  The sheep are tired, too, so they look for a replacement to help Ava get to sleep.  Horses are too beautiful, chickens can't get off the ground, pigs are too lazy.  There are problems with every animal that tries.  When Ava tells the sheep how much they're needed, they get back to work, and she finally gets back to sleep.  A little appreciation can be a lot of motivation!  Can't Sleep Without Sheep can by found in the Easy section under E HIL.

WAG! by Patrick McDonnell

What makes Earl's tail wag?  We know when it wags.  It wags for his food, his friends, his ball, his owner, belly rubs, et cetera .  But what makes it wag?  What do all these things have in common?  Mooch thinks he knows, but he can't quite express it.  Patrick McDonnell, creator of the comic strip Mutts, uses the same comical duo to show that LOVE is the answer and the secret to life's joy.  wag! can be found in the Easy section of the library under E MCD.

Colibrí by Ann Cameron

When “Rosa” was 4 years old, she was kidnapped off a bus in Guatemala City by a man who makes her call him “Uncle.”  Uncle is a con artist and a beggar who, after consulting a fortune teller, is convinced that Rosa is destined to lead him to riches.  When the book opens, Rosa is 12 years old, and her life is getting dangerous as Uncle becomes more and more determined to find wealth.  Rosa turns to a sympathetic fortune teller to help her find her parents.  Colibrí is a story of growing up and finding happiness in an insecure world, but more notably, it is a captivating glimpse into Mayan indigenous culture.  This book will be enjoyed mainly by children ages 9-13 and can be found in the Juvenile section of the library under J CAM.

THE RED PYRAMID by Rick Riordan

If you enjoyed the Percy Jackson series, then you will find the Kane Chronicles series just as exciting. Book One, The Red Pyramid, details the first adventures of the brother-sister duo of Carter and Sadie Kane as they try to save their father and the world from the chaos-causing Egyptian god, Set. This story is full of excitement and non-stop action and includes a lot of Egyptian history and myths. It is also nice that the main characters come from a racially mixed family and are of opposite sex. The audio version of this story is great for family car trips. You can find this book in the juvenile section under J RIO and C J RIO.
