BIG RED LOLLIPOP by Rukhsana Khan

Not only does Rukhsana Khan write a sweet story about being a sister, but she also manages to make it about growing up in a different country than your parents and going against social norms.  Her character, Rubina, learns what it means to be a good big sister, even though it is hard on her and makes her miss out on the American traditions that her Pakistani mother does not understand.  By the end of the book, Rubina discovers the rewards of being selfless and realizes how important doing the right thing is.  This book is good for older elementary school children and would work well for a family read-a-loud.  You can find this story in the picture book section under E KHA.

WHAT’S YOUR SOUND HOUND THE HOUND? by Mo Willems

Mo Willems' new series, Cat the Cat, is an excellent choice for parents to read with their pre-K and younger children. Specifically, What’s Your Sound Hound the Hound? encourages parent and child participation and observation as Cat the Cat seeks out each of her animal friend’s sounds. Children will respond with the proper moos, peeps, and woofs. They will also use their imagination to think of what an animal who does not make a sound would sound like. Additionally, this story includes an underlying message of inclusion and acceptance for friends who are different than you. You can find this book in the picture book section under E WIL.

THE NAME OF THIS BOOK IS SECRET by Pseudonymous Bosch

The Name of This Book Is Secret

By Pseudonymous Bosch

This novel is a "quirky and offbeat" story of two 11-year-old outcasts who are drawn together by the investigation of the suspicious death of a magician. Cass and Max-Ernest combine their individual talents to work together and follow the clues into mysterious and dangerous situations. While trying to uncover the truth of the magician's demise, they find themselves on the brink of uncovering the timeless secret of eternal youth. Written in a Lemony Snicket-esque style, the narrator hesitates in revealing too much information and putting the reader in danger. Boys and girls alike (4th-8th grades) will laugh out loud. This book and its sequel, If You're Reading This It's Too Late, can be found in the Juvenile Fiction section under J BOS.

SPECTACULAR SPECTACLES by Jane O’Connor

In Spectacular Spectacles, Fancy Nancy learns how to accept her best friend’s need for glasses and also how to appropriately deal with her own jealousy over the new glamorous glasses. While not as frilly as other Fancy Nancy books, Spectacular Spectacles focuses more on understanding the differences between ourselves and others. It makes for an excellent parent to child discussion. Though typical Fancy Nancy readers will enjoy this one, it is best suited for lower level school-aged children. It can be found in the picture book section under E OCO.
